President Donald Trump says his campaign is “a joke,” after he tweeted a tweet in support of Sen. Jeff Flake.
The president also claimed the Republican Senator is “totally irrelevant” in the Senate.
The senator tweeted Friday morning: I will fight you.
It’s my first fight in Washington, D.C., and it’s a joke.
I’m not interested in politics, and I’m certainly not interested at all in politics as it pertains to the Presidency.
I think it’s ridiculous to even suggest that he is.
Flake, a Arizona Republican, has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s policies and has called for the president to resign over allegations that he groped women and made inappropriate sexual comments.
In his tweet, Trump claimed the senator was “trying to destroy our party” and was “playing politics” by supporting Flake’s candidacy.
“Senator Flake is totally irrelevant in the U.S. Senate.
He is running for reelection in Arizona,” the president wrote.
“He knows he is running against me in 2018.
I am not running for re-election.”
The president later tweeted that Flake is “not running for anything at all.
He’s playing politics with the party.
And we need unity in our party.”
The Arizona senator tweeted that he will fight Trump.
“It’s my last fight in D.A. & Congress, & @realDonaldTrump is not running,” Flake tweeted.
“I’ll fight for #MAGA, I will support @realDonaldTrump & #MAGAthena in the fight for America!”
The president was referencing his controversial remarks at a rally earlier this month in Alabama.
He called for an investigation into Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, a former judge who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct, and said he would investigate Moore if he were elected.
Trump was also seen at the Alabama rally with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, and Sen. John McCain, the former POW, who has endorsed Moore.
