“I would avoid being out of the water as much and spending time with people, but I would certainly try to socialize,” says O.P. O’Neal, cofounder of the Beach and Author of Surfs Up.

He says, “The more social you are, the better off you’ll be.”

If you do decide to spend time surfing, O’Neals advice is to use the sand, not the surf, to stay in shape.

“If you’re looking to get fit, it’s the sand that’s important,” he says.


Go on a Swim Whether you’re trying to lose weight, boost your immune system, get your heart pumping, or just relax, there are some benefits to swimming.

A 2010 study by the American College of Surgeons found that swimmers who exercise have better blood pressure, lower body mass index and lower levels of cholesterol.

According to O’Donnell, swimmers also have better cardiovascular health and are less likely to develop coronary heart disease.

The beach is also an ideal place to exercise because it offers a relaxing environment and allows you to get out and have fun.
